OPEN WIDE:
The Second Annual Galapagos Staff Show Off Festival
The staff of Galapagos includes some of NYC's best up-and-coming artists.
Tonight, they join together to showcase their work in a big free show. Last
year the staff show was a huge success! We¹re excited to bring it back for
its second year.
On January 6th, the staff of
Galapagos will unveil their newest works in an
innovative synergy of their artistic careers with their work at Galapagos
Art Space. A FREE show packed with music, theater, dance, performance and
visual art, all of it created and performed by members of our staff.
Hosted by comedienne/performance artist Desiree Burch, the evening includes
music by Barbara Hammond and Michael Falatico, new dance from Ori Lenkinski,
stage combat from Christi Waldon, plus performances from the bands Mercat, R.U.O.K., Viva Nada, Black and White Children, Beardlift, Deep Sea Sound Diver, GRAND MASTER BAXTER AND THE FURIOUS FIVE, Pal Secam, and The Fabulous Entourage. Plus DJs Boy Racer and Tikka Masala! And: burlesque from Miss Allison, Ginger, and Miss Erin.
Host: Desiree Burch
Mercat
WE HOLD THESE CATS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT:
Youri Cho: cello, glockenspiel, singing
Gin Cromie: bass, melodica, singing
Claire Hecko: violin, accordian, singing
Dyani Scheuerman: keyboard, glockenspiel, singing
Yseult Tyler: drums, singing
Mercat sounds like a tired sailor looking through the snow at the shore, where he sees a broken-down amusement park that was built in the '30s and lost popularity in the '50s. He feels a bit seasick, and his solitude makes him miss the opportunity to be passive aggressive with the people he loves.
He considers the benefits, once he gets home, of letting loose a pack of anthropomorphic animals in a warehouse of oldinstruments.
And then Mercat started to grow claws, in Brooklyn and Queens, and
believed they wouldn't have bad dreams if they told themselves not to.
R.U.O.K
R.U.O.K. is a four-piece combining raw emotional frenzy and moody melodic ambience with the greatest of ease. They're one of Galapagos' favorite bands -- and one of the best unsigned bands in NYC. They're gonna be huge. http://Ruokmusic.com
The Fabulous Entourage
The Fabulous Entourage has been described as a combination of "art-house punk and sugar-coated pop" by The New York Press. Compared to Devo by The New York Times and The B52's by LA Splash Magazine, this keyboard/ bass/ drum trio, joined by two Supremes-style female vocalists, has forged a reputation for lush arrangements, throbbing beats, and glam-rock theatrics. www.fabulousentourage.com
Pal Secam
Tamika Rivera Vocals/Guitar ,Gustav Mergins Bass/Vocals, Chris keegan /drums

Melatonin, Sonata, Lunesta, and Ambien but not in that order or necessarily at all. Come by and count time as they pluck strings and sing you some hymns you cant bring to church.

Grand Master Baxter & the furious 5 (secret show by one of nyc's best!)
GRAND MASTER BAXTER & THE FURIOUS 5: A secret show by one of nyc's bests's. All we can tell you is they have a deal in the U.K., have received significant play on Radio 1 & XFM (London), Krock2 & 92.3 Free FM (NYC), Kroq (L.A.), and are serious f*#%ng vampires.
Lead Singer, Baxter is considered galapagos's most loyal employee. Although he drinks out of a bowl, his haircuts rival even those of his owner.
A true ladies dog.
Christi Waldon
Christi is a choreographer of staged fight combat. She has a monthly show at galapagos called Circo Pelear. CIRCO PELEAR is a Spanish Fight Circus featuring wild animals, dancing, sexy ladies, drinking, transvestites... and dueling. Amazing.
Miss Allison
http://www.myspace.com/missallisonbelolan
There's a bit of the devil in me...or so say's my mother.
After a period of performing as a knife throwers assistant, Miss Allison decided to get adventurous, and break into the burlesque scene. She was recently given the position of Burlesque Manager at Galapagos Art Space, and now is the woman behind the beauties at Monday Night Burlesque. Miss Allison can be found there every Monday night.
Beardlift

Mike Campbell (pictured) and his band beardlift have anything but a cosmetic sound. You'll have friggin heart attack when you hear their sound.
DJ
Tikka Masala

http://www.myspace.com/djtikkamasala
manufactured in India (Calcutta, or KOLKATA to be precise), exported to the US, assembled in New Jersey, parts tested (for quality assurance) in California (northern), and re-assembled in NYC where I currently reside on a loft shelf in williamsburg BK - I know the last part is a little cliche. Find me at cooper square on the day to day - i make machines work and kids think. so you REALLY want to know what it's about... you should come to this
Miss Erin
http://www.myspace.com/misspettycash We may even get treated to a belly dancing number by our finance director Erin Leigh. Thant is if she has enough to drink, drink, drink!
Ginger
http://www.myspace.com/halstonthegingerbruceGinger became a favorite at galapagos when she won consecutive Amateur bulesque contests at galapagos and held the miss galapagazonga crown for as long as any amateur could. Perhaps she will reveal something tonight?
Robert Elmes
Every Year at this event, Robert Elmes (pictured) gives a toast that always seems to find a way to articulate how much galapagos values its staff. Once again, he brings us all together to raise our glasses in honor of one another.
