Ocularis presents
Blood and Guts in Progress

Award-winning film series!
Laura Parnes previews a single channel selection of her current work-in-progress, Blood and Guts in High School. An installation loosely based on Kathy Acker's book, each chapter plays in separate yet adjacent enclosures concurrently. This simultaneity reflects Acker's experimentation with non-linear narratives. The notion of storytelling is further disrupted through the use of stark, stylized dialog and sets that allow for a dark resonance. Seemingly banal statements take on multiple meanings as they echo through the emptiness of the characters lives.

Set in New York City from 1978-1982,"Blood and Guts in High School" takes place during the rise of Reagan republicanism and the emergence of punk rock. Each chapter presents a typical scene in the life of Janie bracketed by world events. These events undulate through the character's daily experience, informing her bleak worldview and her desire for rebellion. As the viewer looks back at these pivotal historical events, connections are drawn in relation to our current political situation.

To be shown with Parnes’ The Real Art World.

Jonathan Levy's Antilles Connection

with Oran Etkin and Abdulaye Duo

The soulful Caribbean melodies invoked by Antilles Connection are there one minute, deconstructed the next and put back together again, revealing a fresh perspective on this deep and beautiful folk tradition. This group features some of the best veteran and new jazz talent in NYC, including Curtis Fowlkes on trombone and Oran Etkin on reeds. Opening will be Oran Etkin in duo with West African guitar player, Abdulaye, playing traditional West African songs and originals arranged in a modern jazz context.

"This quartet is equal parts playful steel and serious reed, featuring original jazz compositions and arrangements of traditional songs from the Lesser Antilles (Grenada, Trinidad, Martinique, etc.). The band includes Oran Etkin on sax/clarinet, whose already brilliant stylings are particularly provocative in the Caribbean mode, and composer Jonathan levy on drums, whose repertoire with the group occasionally strays to the North Country, including Nick Drake and Twin Peaks arrangements. Shaking your head? Trust us, it works beautifully."

The Flanks + The Defibrulators

It's an old-timey rollicking jug band hullabaloo!

Since 2002, The Flanks have been playing in and around New York, converting everyone within shouting distance to belief in their all-spit-and-no-polish country jug band stylings. "The Flanks are sort of like post-war Blind Willie McTell meets pre-A Star Is Born Kris Kristofferson meets Jimmie Rodgers without the tuberculosis. In other words, you don't want to miss them." -Sarah "Seven Plate" Almond of The Conway Twitty Death Probe

Armed with an array of washboards, banjos, fiddles, telecaster kazoos, and classic honky-tonk harmonies, The Defibulators (pictured) jumpstart the raucous and nostalgic sound of ancient hillbilly roadhouse music. Their influences range widely from Hasil Adkins to Basil Hayden's, from Dolly Parton to Fried Chicken, tequila, beef, and most beers, foreign and domestic.

The Cinematic Underground
presents ANNATHESIA
a live concert narrative

Best described as a film trapped in a CD, The Cinematic Underground have translated their debut concept narrative Annasthesia into a simultaneous live concert and projected graphic novella. Filled with intricate watercolors, horns, guitars, and enough raucous drums to permanently pin your testicles to your anus, the live production of Annasthesia merges sight & sound while telling a heart-numbing story of love and escape.

More a community than a band, The Cinematic Underground features a dozen artists, musicians and technicians from England and America. They have recently emerged from a self-imposed exile in a large house somewhere on the Eastern sea board.

"I strain to think of another narrative presentation as intriguing as this... It excels as a short work of literary fiction, as a dramatic play, as a musical composition of the highest quality, and as a series of beautiful visual works of art." - Jeremy Bryan, Figureheads

"Unparalleled Masterpiece" - Dave Herrera, Westword Alternative Weekly

"Lyrically beautiful... Mind-blowing... A masterpiece of a tale." - Chad Mitchell, Paste Punk
