Goethe-Institut and Galapagos Present
“What is Green Architecture?”
Roughly half the energy consumed in the developed world is used to run and operate buildings. The theme of this presentation is to explore and assess emerging urban design principles and practical strategies for more energy-efficient cities, beyond the scale and scope of the individual building. "What Is Green Architecture?" series curator and moderator Dr. Andres Lepik studied art history and German literature at universities in Augsburg and Munich, earning his Ph. D. in Rome on Architectural Models in the Renaissance. He is currently Curator in the Architecture & Design Department of The Museum of Modern Art, as well as author of "Skyscrapers".

From the Big Top to Coney Island: The Rise of Leisure
By Sarah Brockett
Historically, circuses, world's fairs, and amusement parks did much more than entertain. They educated Americans on class and race hierarchies, reinforced gender roles, and schooled them in nationalism during an imperial age. At the same time, they helped Americans adapt to an increasingly modern era and urban lifestyle, pushing Victorian middle-class boundaries and producing some of the most impressive technological advances of the time. And oh yeah, they were fun too. This presentation looks at how leisure evolved in the United States at the turn-of-the-century and how it spawned local landmarks such as Luna Park and Coney Island

Dan Nainan, Comedian
As a senior engineer with Intel Corp. in the late 1990s, Dan Nainan designed and presented highly technical demonstrations on stage with Intel Chairman Andy Grove and other senior executives at high-profile events all over the world. Nainan took a comedy class to help get over the fear of public speaking at these events, at which the audiences numbered in the thousands or sometimes in the millions on television. After retiring from Intel to pursue comedy full time, Dan has toured as a feature act with Robert Schimmel and Russell Peters. Dan has appeared on network television including "Last Comic Standing" as well
as in feature films and in radio and television commercials.

Film Screening: America the Mental
"America The Mental" is a experimental mockumentary film shot on an extremely low budget with pro-sumer gear. The entire film was improvised on the spot only following a two-page hand written outline. After working as actors and crewmembers for many years on many large budget films and TV shows the filmmakers decided to set out and see if they could create a compelling film without money, a crew, or a script. America The Mental is the story of a German documentary director and crew who come to the USA to make a documentary about artists in NY and end up finding a struggling stand-up comic through craigslist. They soon discover that the comedians day job is much more interesting than his artist aspirations, he is a drug enforcer for a living. Soon our director and crew become too close to their subject and become part of the story themselves, and even become a part of ‘America The Mental.’
