Ben Neill –
Night Science CD release party
BUY TICKETS HERE!
Featuring performances by:
Ben Neill (Thirsty Ear) with video by Bill Jones
Peter Gordon (Love of Life Orchestra) with video by Kit Fitzgerald
DJ Dave Q (Dub War)
In celebration of his new CD Night Science on Thirsty Ear Recordings, Ben Neill will perform music from the recording on his mutantrumpet with live interactive video by his visual collaborator Bill Jones. Joining Neill on the bill will be saxophonist/composer Peter Gordon with video by Kit Fitzgerald, and DJ Dave Q, the founder of New York City’s acclaimed dubstep event Dub War. The evening will be a compelling mix of live music,
electronica and live video.
Neill has been described as a “creative composer, genius performer and inventor of the mutantrumpet” (Time Out NY) whose music “masterfully blurs the lines between electronic dance music and jazz sounds” (Billboard). His new CD combines dubstep beats and basslines with the trippy, otherworldly sonic explorations of the mutantrumpet, which was redesigned in 2008 during a residency at the STEIM studios in Amsterdam. Bill Jones has created a body of interactive video to accompany the music which uses luminous black
and white images of film noir as its inspiration. In Neill and Jones’ performance the dynamics and notes of Neill’s playing animate the moving images, creating an improvised narrative that is directly tied to the music.
Peter Gordon is a seminal figure in the New York music community. He first gained attention with his Love of Life Orchestra, which helped define the fusion of experimental composition with punk and jazz infused dance music. Gordon has worked with some of the most influential artists and musicians of the past decades, including Laurie Anderson, Arthur Russell, Lawrence Weiner, Richard Foreman, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane, and David Van Tieghem. His collaborations with video-artist Kit Fitzgerald at venues such as DTW,
La Mama and BAM/Next Wave Festival have pioneered live video performance.
Gordon is currently working on a new LOLO album for DFA Records.
Dave Q is the founder and resident of the US's original dubstep party, Dub War NYC. He has played at London's seminal DMZ night, at Smog and Pure Filth in LA, and many of the leading dubstep events around the US. Along with fellow Dub War residents Joe Nice and MC Juakali, DQ has been at the forefront of breaking the dubstep sound in the US and plays a selection of the most sought after dubplates from the scene's top producers, as well has his own productions. He has shared the bill with artists including Skream, Digital Mystikz, Loefah, Kode 9, N-Type, and most of the leading DJ's in the scene in London -- and he continues to push the boundaries of the music by constantly experimenting and challenging audiences with new sounds.

For the opening event of Archipelago, violist Nadia Sirota returns to Galapagos Art Space for the first time since her triumphant album release concert this past May. Nadia will reprise highlights from her recent album, first things first and will premiere a number of new works, including Future Shock for solo viola and electronics by New Amsterdam co-director William Brittelle. Percussion quartet Line C3 (Haruka Fujii, John Ostrowski, Eric Poland, and Chris Thompson) will join Nadia for the world premiere of a new work for viola and percussion quartet by Marcos Balter, whose works Ut and Live Water were included on first things first. Line C3 will also perform some of the quartet's established standards, including Nico Muhly's Ta & Clap, David T. Little's Speak Softly, and Carl Schimmel's Serving Size 4 Bunnies.
Nadia will be premiering a new piece by acclaimed composer/singer Our Lady J. www.ourladyj.com
Nadia Sirota has been hailed by Time Out New York as one of New York's "brightest, busiest players," and for having "enery, fluidity and an ear for electronic coloration" by the New York Times. She is best known for her unique interpretations of new scores and for commissioning and premiering works by some of the most talented composers of her generation. Her debut solo album first things first, which was released on New Amsterdam Records in May of 2009, has received glowing praise from critics all around. Richard Scheinin of the San Jose Mercury New compared listening to the album to "a stroll through an exotic garden, with new species grabbing the eye with each go-around." Mia Clarke at Time Out Chicago called the album "excellent," and praised Sirota's ability to "create a connection that's imaginative and often thrilling" between the "many distinctive composers' voices." Nadia received her bachelor's and master's degrees in viola performance from The Juilliard School, and regularly plays with groups such as yMusic, the Wordless Music Orchestra and ACME as well as bands such as Grizzly Bear, Ratatat, Stars of the Lid and My Brightest Diamond. She also co-hosts Overnight Music on WNYC.

The group convenes in many different settings for a diverse array of projects, and is known for combining an uncompromising standard of performance with an easygoing emphasis on fun.
