The Field Panel Discussion
Starving Artist: Fact or Fiction: Non-Profit Doesn’t = No Money
Why do artists often think that you are a sell out if you make money from your art? Why do we seem to believe that you must suffer to make great art, yet we pine away for the seemingly Utopian state sponsored art cultures of Berlin and Brussels? Is there something inherently hierarchical and damaging in the “gift economy” that the arts and philanthropy work in? The non-profit model that most artists use may not be the best model for your work, yet we gravitate to it like lemmings? What about being for-profit or for-benefit? What does that even mean really? What about LLCs and L3Cs and what about a blend model?
Join The Field and Galapagos in a lively free discussion about the dysfunctional psychology of the non-profit model, and learn about potential alternative business models that might serve you and your work better. Learn about The Field’s Economic Revitalization for Performing Artists (ERPA) project and how you can apply to participate in ERPA’s entrepreneurial lab.
Moderated by Sara Juli, Performance Artist/Director of Development at Dance Theater Workshop. Confirmed Panelists (as of 8/21) include Robert Elmes, Director, Galapagos Art Space; Amanda Clayman, Financial Wellness Program, The Actors Fund; Chris Ajemian, Artist, Entrepreneur; And more TBA.

Goethe-Institut New York presents 'With God on Our Side' series:
A Conversation between Marcia Pally and Joerg Lau
With God on our Side IV: Evangelicals in US politics, Muslims in Europe’s
Evangelicalism was a progressive force and America’s dominant religion from the colonial era till WWI. Prof. Pally will discuss evangelicalism’s contribution to US pluralism, church-state separation, and foreign policy. How is evangelicalism, only recently conservative, changing today, and what will be its role after the election? Looking at religion in Germany, Joerg Lau notes that the presence of a sizeable Muslim minority challenges the relation of religion and state and the concept of German secularism. A new form of religious and cultural pluralism is needed in Germany, as in other European countries, while Muslims are pushing for recognition and incorporation in the institutional framework of Germany. Mr. Lau will discuss if there are lessons to be learned from the American way of dealing with these issues.
Marcia Pally's most recent books are Warnung vor dem Freunde: Tradition und Zukunft amerikanischer AuBenpolitik [Religion expressed/Religion submerged: Evangelicalism and the Foreign Policy of the Country with the Biggest Guns] and Die hintergruendige Religion: Der Einfluss des evangelikalismus auf die Gesissensfreiheit, Pluralismus, und US-Amerikanische Politik [Religion behind the scenes: The influence of evangelicalism on freedom of conscience, pluralism and American politics]. Prof. Pally is a frequent contributor to Die Zeit, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Frankfurter Rundschau, die Tageszeitung, among other German publications.
Joerg Lau is editor of the German weekly paper Die Zeit, based in the Berlin office. He writes about integration and immigration issues and recently has been focusing on cultural debates about the role of religion and the dialogue between the “West” and “Islam”. Prior to his position at Die Zeit, he was in charge of the literary desk at Die Tageszeitung, a Berlin based daily paper. In 2000, he published a biography Hans Magnus Enzensberger. A public life.
