Galapagos and WNYC present
A Leonard Lopate Show Screening of All the President's Men

Free with RSVP to projections@wnyc.org.
Part of WNYC's year-long film series, Political Projections.

Each month, from now until Election Day 2008, WNYC's Leonard Lopate talks to film critics, historians, filmmakers, and listeners to find out how Hollywood has portrayed Washington politics over the past 70 years. Political Projections, a monthly segment on Leonard's show, focuses on corrupt candidates, virtuous do-gooders, presidents and politicians who have been popular subjects on the silver screen since the early days of film.

** We love WNYC. We think that they're far and away one of the most important cultural forces shaping our city today. And we especially love WNYC online. As newspapers across the country wilt and as their cultral pages struggle to define who they'll be, WNYC, with On The Media, The Brian Lehrer Show, The Leonard Lopate Show and The Next Big Thing is not only redefining what radio is, but redefining how we engage media itself.

Novice Theory

Galapagos and Earl Dax present rising star of the downtown music scene Novice Theory's musicianship and captivating stage presence. Combining his virtuoso talent on piano and accordion with a salty and soulful voice you won't soon forget, Novice Theory (AKA Geo Wyeth) offers an evening of intimate, gutsy and otherworldly songs. With a sound the Village Voice proclaimed is "destined to carry him smoothly toward breakout stardom," this young marvel is headed straight to the top.

First Annual Nerd Nite Nerdtacular

I hope you’re either wearing a helmet or are within close proximity of a neurosurgeon, because what you’re about to read will blow your mind. Iím proud to announce the first ever Nerd Nite Nerdtacular! The Nerdtacular will not only feature presentations by the Nerd Nite Boston host (did you see his last presentation about zombies?), a writer from The Daily Show, and a super triple-extra-secret special guest, but it’ll even boast the musical stylings of Overlord (not a metal band) so you can rock out while simultaneously viewing some of the best mental hygiene movie footage around. Even photos of abandoned building and insane asylums by former Nerd Nite presenter Matthew King.  Plus, the new Galapagos features an 1,800 sq ft indoor lake which makes its old reflecting pool in Williamsburg look as big as an ascaris lumbricoides (yes, human parasite analogies never go out of style).
So yes, you’re right, it is going to be awesome.

As they say in Boston, it’s like the Discovery Channel with beer.

Bio: Not for the faint of heart

*Presentation #2:
What to Expect When We’re Exploding: Different Religions’ Beliefs about the End-Times
by Rob Kutner

The faithful getting a skybox to watch the ultimate Jesus-Satan grudge match. A “massive transformation” to take place in 2012. The Earth covered in a giant spiderweb and slammed with a great blue star. For every belief system in our world, thereís a belief how it will end. Can only one be right and more importantly, have you subscribed to it? Rob Kutner, author of Apocalypse How, tells you everything you need to prepare for the ultimate “Told ya so.”

Rob Kutner is an Emmy-award-winning writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and a contributor to America: The Book. He has written humor and feature pieces for the New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Esquire, and Maxim, and has a “go bag” at the ready in his New York apartment.

*Presentation #3:
The Neurobiology of Zombies - Part 2
by Jeremy Kay

Description: Zombie mind control is real! Some types of parasites have the ability to turn their hosts into zombies that serve the needs and whims of the parasitic invader. Following up on my last Nerd Nite talk a few months ago, I'll give some more examples of real-life zombies and delve into the neurobiology of how a parasite can control the behavior of its host.

Bio: Jeremy is a postdoctoral fellow in neuroscience at Harvard. His professional work concerns vision, but he thinks parasite mind-control is far more interesting. His interest in zombies is purely academic. Really. Like, your brain will totally not get eaten if you show up. We promise.
