Sometimes Why + Jake Silver + Earthworks Song and Salvage
Budding
Michigan indie-folk label Earthwork Music presents a showcase
of their finest young songsters. The "Earthwork
Song and Salvage Tour" (top picture) combines
the efforts of longtime friends and collaborators Joshua
Davis, Daisy May and Seth Bernard in support of their
newly released solo albums. Expect dusty balladry, heartful
love poerty, people's history lessons, plenty of harmony
and a little bit of ridiculousness with Dominic Suchyta
sealing the deal on upright bass.

Sometimes
Why is an all-female folk-pop trio. Featuring Kristin
Andreassen (of Uncle Earl), Ruth Ungar (of the Mammals),
and
Aoife O'Donovan (of Crooked Still), Sometimes Why performs
mostly original songs with some hip covers thrown in there.
The girls sing lush, haunting harmonies around one microphone,
and pass around instruments such as guitars, ukeleles,
fiddles, glockenspiels, harmonicas, tambourines, cowbells,
and pianos. Okay, they don't pass around the piano, but
they DO play it.

From the mountains of Big Sur, California, to Brooklyn,
New York, the four members of Palo Colorado (bottom
pic) have been dazzling audiences for years. The result
of this long term musical relationship is an intuitive
chemistry seldom found in newer projects. The sounds of
Palo Colorado are an original blend of ambient surf rock,
reggae and disco flavors, featuring keyboards, electric
guitar and bass, and drums. Palo Colorado have become
mainstays in the Williamsburg music scene with their regular
Sunday night appearance at Fada on Driggs.

The Emperor's Naked Army Marches
On
Kazuo Hara, 1987, 122 min.
Supervised
by Shohei Imamura, director Hara recorded the strange
crusade of Kenzo Okuzaki as he tried to resolve the gruesome
mystery which haunted him for the past forty years. Why
were some of his WWII comrades executed by their own commanders...and
what became of the bodies? In spite of his sense of justice,
Okuzaki's methods border on the psychotic, and Hara's
camera captures it all.
