The 12th Street Playboys

When it comes to Cajun music, New York City can do no better than the 12th Street Playboys. This traditionalist trio performs Acadian French two-steps and heartwrenching waltzes in a raw, decidedly rural style. Casting aside the tired references to crawfish and jambalaya, their repertoire leans heavilly towards the masters of the genre: Iry Lejeune, Dennis McGee, and Joe Falcon. The 12th Street Playboys are: Kevin Anthony: guitar, fiddle; Henry Hample: fiddle, vocals; and Nicolas Beaudoing (Cajun accordion, guitar, and vocals).

The 101

Featuring Eric Richter of Christie Front Drive and Antarctica, Brooklyn's The 101 are quickly becoming known as one of the tightest, most engaging bands around. Their textured power-pop draws on influences that range from traditional American alt-rock to ambient British guitarscapes.

"Like bands such as the Smiths, the 101 seem informed by punk's viscerality and immediacy, but equally aware of what it takes to make an intrinsically great pop song. If you're into interesting, sophisticated but still instantly likable emo and pop this is a band who you should probably be following religiously." -dfbpunk.com

Vic Thrill + Dentist Dentista (formerly known as Nimbus)

Two of New York's hottest electropunk combos hit the Galapagos stage with their critically-acclaimed stage antics.

Dentist Dentista has a certain circus energy and crunch, like Henry Mancini with a distortion pedal. They fuse new wave garage pop and eclectic rock & roll influences into a danceable, thinkable mix.

Vic Thrill (pictured) was created by former Bogmen vocalist, Billy Campion (Vic Thrill) and Garden Variety guitarist Anthony Rizzo (Saturn Missile). The reaction to this Brooklyn-based band's first full-length record, CE-5, has been extraordinary.

"A hybrid of electronica, power chords and snyth pop that could light up a disco on Saturn." -Washington Post

OCULARIS
award-winning film series

Son of Tutti Frutti
Martin Heath, Roger Cross, and Deanne Taylor Can, 1972, 100 min.

This fun, freewheeling compilation of music, performances from feature films, documentaries and cartoons starts with Bessie Smith in 1935 and takes a more serious turn with the Rolling Stones’ Dublin Show.

Both Martin Heath and his wonderful partner Janet will be here in person.

Martin Heath is quite the character, a proprietor-cum-projectionist-cum-bicycle repairman, and 2004 winner of LIFT’s Tom Berner Award! He is coming to us all the way from Toronto where he founded a microcinema, the CineCycle, in 1970, which has for many years been a staple for the independent film community there. Heath is also a film preservationist as well as a key staff member of the Toronto Film Festival, and has been affiliated with such prominent organizations as Inside Out, LIFT, and Pleasure Dome, making him a guiding light in the world of Canadian cinephiles.
