Ocularis:
Bruce McClure: Thwarted, Throttled, Thrown and Then Thump

An evening of live performance and discussion by 'paracinema' artist Bruce McClure. Since 1994, when he started designing discs for an updated phenakistiscope (animation device that dates back to the 1830s), artist and architect Bruce McClure has amassed a body of work that uses the occasion of film projection to create a visceral hybrid of vaudeville, installation and cinema. Drawing on the experience of Harold Edgerton's stroboscopic flash and the flicker films of recent decades, McClure has developed his own lexicon of intervaled light, reveling in the grammar of its repetition to evoke altered states of consciousness.

For this lecture-demonstration, the artist will premiere a new work, prepared specifically for Ocularis, and discuss the techniques of its effect. Special attention will be given to the morphology of the 16mm projector and the emancipating effect of obstructions to its ordinary functions. An inventory of his expanded cinema tools, optical soundtracks, and performance issues will be discussed. Dialogue is encouraged between the audience and artist.

"This presentation will consist of works that articulate the willful glow of the projector bulb while shunning the cozening effect of cinema. The camera is now off our backs and film, typically an intermediate agent, takes on a new identity. Here the projector will be our dutiful companion perched over our shoulders motoring through time with the beat of intermittent light. Film, once criticized as out of focus, becomes recognizable. The projector, whose machinery, optics, and sound system have been shunted to the wayside, re-enter the theater not as cinema's silent and faithful servant, but as a star." - Bruce McClure

Curated and facilitated by Nick Hallett.

POINT BREAK LIVE:
The Cult Hit Returns for a Special St. Patrick's Day Show!

Point Break LIVE!, the absurdist stage adaptation of the 1992 Keanu Reeves extreme-sports blockbuster, surfs into Galapagos for an exclusive one-month engagement.

The show, which garnered a “Seattle P-I Best of Seattle 2004” award, as well as rave reviews across the nation, tells the story of former College football star Johnny Utah—Keanu Reeves in the film—in pursuit of the bankrobbing, skydiving, bare-hand-fighting adrenaline-junkie-cum-Zenmaster Bodhi Sattva (Patrick Swayze—here played by Gearick Matthies), and features armed robbery, big-wave surfing, car chases, explosions, and no less than two extended skydiving sequences.

Best of all, the starring role of Keanu will be selected at random from the audience each night, and will read their entire script off of cue-cards!

Seattle P-I Theatre Critic Joe Adcock noted that, “the worse it gets, the better it gets,” and, in singling it out for a Best of 2004 award, praised the play as, “Sensationally idiotic.”

THIS SHOW IS SOLD OUT, BUT TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE EXTENSION IN APRIL! CLICK HERE!

Cinematic Underground

Returning to Galapagos after a near sellout show in November is The Cinematic Underground. Drawing inspiration from the theatre, architectural theory, archaic literary structure, children's book illustrations, and Radiohead, they'll set out to once again present the story of their debut concept narrative, Annasthesia, live:

a precise tragedy of the recent past told through the combination of many artistic disciplines; a rock show resembling a novel; a nerve-touching autopsy of existence: a story of love and escape

http://www.thecinematicunderground.com

"If Coldplay's last album was an innocent, underage beer, Annasthesia is heroin."
-Ian Mathers, Stylus Magazine

"Lyrically beautiful. Mind blowing. A masterpiece of a tale."
-Chad Mitchell, Paste Punk

TribalHybrid:
an Urban Convergence of the East Coast Tribal Dance & Music Scene with Alchemy Dance Theater and Raquy and the Cavemen

A night of contemporary global dance and music – celebrating the alchemy of tradition and innovation…tribal and urban…ritual and spectacle.

TribalHybrid is a forum for new growth, new fusion, new synthesis in the world of NYC contemporary global performance. It's a new evolution that crosses the boundaries of tribal bellydance, contemporary dance, Middle Eastern music, rock music, and beyond.

Alchemy Dance Theater creates a moving collage across cultures, from the ancient to the modern. Their energetic and sinuous style samples from the traditional dances of countries from India to Morocco to Spain and mixes them with elements of contemporary dance from butoh to hip hop.

Raquy and the Cavemen blend the exotic instruments and complex musical traditions of the Middle East with the intensity and power of a rock band. Their electrifying and organic performances explode with dense layers of driving percussion, electric guitar and bass, and the haunting melodies of the ancient ney flute and the violin-like Iranian kamanche.

Also performing are three inspiring troupes from the local tribal fusion bellydance scene: the Alchemy Tribal Collective, Daughters of Ishtar, and SoMaFeRaFiRe.

Galapagos Art Space & The Ontological-Hysteric Incubator
Present 'East Meets West,' Hosted by:
JOHN MORAN...and his neighbor, SAORI

"With a one-hour show, he has reaffirmed his reputation as one of the most important (and underrated) figures in the avant-garde scene." - Timeout NY

"Moran is a modern day Mozart." - The Boston Globe

Together, 'JOHN MORAN...and his neighbor, SAORI' will ride wave after wave of psychotically disparate emotions this month, and yet basically 'keep it together' as they stumble their way through a variety of 'avant garde' things and you sit on your drunken ass judging!

With a Choreography by: ABBY CHAN-YANG
...AND a Monthly Special-Guest Curated by: 'THE ONTOLOGICAL-HYSTERIC INCUBATOR'

John Moran has generally been considered the protege of composer Philip Glass, having been discovered by Mr. Glass at a young age. His strangely avant garde operatic works have featured performers such as Iggy Pop, Uma Thurman, Julia Stiles, Allen Ginsberg and many others. 'The New York Times' have consistently referred to him as "...one of the leading vanguards of American music-theater.", describing his works as, "phenomenal." These multi-disciplined works are stange and notoriously difficult to classify...like 'Disneyland' on acid.

Saori Tsukada is a classically trained ballet-dancer and gymnist from Tokyo. She has lived in New York the
past 6 years, after moving to America alone, and speaking no english. Since that time she has made built a strong reputation, performing with groups like International WOW co., director Aya Ogowa and a host of New York performance ensembles.

Together in 2006, Moran and Saori have performed at The Kitchen, Galapagos, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, The Knitting Factory, The Ontological-Hysteric Theater, The Philidelphia-Fringe, and various theaters around the country. They have recently been invited to perform in China and The Dublin-Fringe Festival. This year they are also teaching 'Advanced Soundtrack for Theater', at Tisch/NYU.

Snap Pusher

Snap Pusher creates music that is rock-based, but they do not hesitate to mix in a bevy of other elements. When it comes to live performances, Snap Pusher always goes the extra mile to ensure that viewers walk away from the gig feeling like they saw a good performance and not just a band playing music. Guest performers and theatrics are a staple of Snap Pusher shows -- but they never let their showmanship get in the way of creating good music.

Wahoo Skiffle Crazies

The Wahoo Skiffle Crazies hail from Staten Island, where the hills of the eastern seaboard’s highest elevation meet the swamps of New York State’s southernmost tip. Known well as “The Island’s Premier Jug Band”™, they are, in fact, the Island’s only jug band.

Since the spring of 2004, audiences, both young and not so young, have treasured their unique sound, their wild energy, and repertoire spanning the centuries – from ragtime, blues, traditional folk, and Sixties rock to near anything in the Jug band cannon, as well as numerous originals.

Monika Heidemann Band
with Lily Maase and Felili

Monika Heidemann twists together vocal improvisation and jazz sensibility with catchy pop melodies and the grind of rock n' roll, adding enough subconscious creativity to still question where this music could have come from. Expect off-beat humor and smart, avant-garde arrangements, strong melodies and remarkable musical vocabularies. Stories told through these modern day art-songs are supported by an equally captivating band of brilliant musicians and improvisors. They explore the colliding worlds of technical and spontaneous, an emotional journey bringing to life the dreamlike poetry of her songs. Her album 'Bright' featuring her compositions, plus two songs by the late saxophonist Steve Lacy, is beginning to receive enthusiastic approval.
www.monikah.com

"Outstanding... treasure from this great new singer and her incredible band." -Downtown Music Gallery

"Heidemann is busy creating her own totally engrossing musical world that must be heard rather than read about. Bright, might just be the beginning of a new jazz genre in search of a name. Highly recommended." -All About Jazz

Lily Maase is a modern guitarist with one foot in rock and roll and the other in the avant garde. Her quintet, theSuiteUnraveling, is a symptom of this diversity. It's a jazz group that sounds like a rock band. It's a rock band that plays chamber music. It's about exploring new colors and space, wherever that may lead. www.lilymaase.com

Singer/songwriter Felili plays intelligent, pop/soul. Performs with tastefully arranged acoustic/electric guitars, upright bass, drums, & violin. www.felili.net
