Ocularis:
Bruce McClure: Thwarted, Throttled, Thrown
and Then Thump
An
evening of live performance and discussion
by 'paracinema' artist Bruce McClure. Since
1994, when he started designing discs for
an updated phenakistiscope (animation device
that dates back to the 1830s), artist and
architect Bruce McClure has amassed a body
of work that uses the occasion of film projection
to create a visceral hybrid of vaudeville,
installation and cinema. Drawing on the
experience of Harold Edgerton's stroboscopic
flash and the flicker films of recent decades,
McClure has developed his own lexicon of
intervaled light, reveling in the grammar
of its repetition to evoke altered states
of consciousness.
For
this lecture-demonstration, the artist will
premiere a new work, prepared specifically
for Ocularis, and discuss the techniques
of its effect. Special attention will be
given to the morphology of the 16mm projector
and the emancipating effect of obstructions
to its ordinary functions. An inventory
of his expanded cinema tools, optical soundtracks,
and performance issues will be discussed.
Dialogue is encouraged between the audience
and artist.
"This
presentation will consist of works that
articulate the willful glow of the projector
bulb while shunning the cozening effect
of cinema. The camera is now off our backs
and film, typically an intermediate agent,
takes on a new identity. Here the projector
will be our dutiful companion perched over
our shoulders motoring through time with
the beat of intermittent light. Film, once
criticized as out of focus, becomes recognizable.
The projector, whose machinery, optics,
and sound system have been shunted to the
wayside, re-enter the theater not as cinema's
silent and faithful servant, but as a star."
- Bruce McClure

and facilitated by Nick Hallett.

Julie Atlas Muz gives us a rethinking of the burlesque

medically altered horror at its heart." -Philadelphia
