Ocularis:
Mary Ellen Bute Centennial

This year marks the centennial of pioneering animator Mary Ellen Bute. Responsible for some of the earliest abstract films in America, and later one of the first artists to use oscilloscopes, she is also known for her collaborations with the likes of Norman McClaren and Leon Theremin, among others. This evening, we present a selection of nearly all her shorts. Teaming the formal rigor of Oskar Fischinger with the zip of a Merrie Melody, Bute's visual music is renowned for its brilliant use of color, light, and lyrical geometries.

With an introduction by writer and historian Cecile Starr.

Work to be screened: Synchrony, 5 min, 1932; Rhythm in Light, 3 min, 1934; Synchrony No. 2, 6 min, 1935; Dada, 3 min, 1936; Parabola, 9 min, 1937; Escape, 4 min, 1937; Spook Sport, 8 min, 1939; Tarantella, 5 min, 1940; Polka Graph, 4 min, 1947; Color Rhapsody, 6 min, 1948; Imagination, 3 min, 1948; New Sensations in Sound, 3 min, 1949; Abstronic, 7 min, 1952.

And be sure to check out Bute's feature-length adaptation of Finnegan's Wake later this week at the New York Public Library's Donnell Media Center. The screening, which also includes her later animation Mood Contrasts, will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 2:30 PM.

Albert Pla with Matacerdos

In the era of "genres", Albert Pla is an anomaly. If his music is difficult to categorize, so are his performances. He has come to be known as a singer-songwriter that neither fears controversy nor goes after it as a selling strategy. Matacerdos, his most recent live show, marks his New York debut. The show includes accompaniment by guitarist Diego Cortés (Mike Oldfield, Santana, Larry Coryell, Paco de Lucía) and Judit Farrés on computer, keyboard, clarinet, Peruvian cajón and chorus. Featuring popular songs like Joaquín el Necio, El Gallo, Lola, Yo quiero que tú sufras, Chatarrero, La dama de la Guadaña, El lado más bestia de la vida (his cover of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side"), El bar de la esquina, Los ojos, Carta al Rey Melchor, and El sol de verano. For more information on Albert Pla go to: www.albertpla.com

" Albert Pla situates himself once again on the edge of an abyss with a theatrical show that goes against the grain of norms and political correctness in terms of sex, homosexuality, prison, exaggerated love, drugs, AIDS, death…
