SMUT is a provocative new weekly series that presents explicit art side by side with intellectual discourse.

This week at SMUT:

THE LIPSTICK LOVELIES in "Hotel Femme Fatale"

Welcome to the Hotel Femme Fatale, a lush paradise where music fills the air, seduction lingers through every corridor, and The Lipstick Lovelies eagerly await your arrival, ready to entice and delight you.

During your stay, be sure to tip the bellboy for his assistance, sample some sensual treats concocted by the house chef, summon hotel security for some late night comfort, and lose your inhibitions with the wickedly fun madame.

Described as a feast for the eyes and boost to the libido, Hotel brings to life a cast of bordello staff and patrons, played by The Lipstick Lovelies and their favorite bad boys, through song, dance, camp and video. Since their creation in 2003, the Lipstick Lovelies have been "camping it up on the Hudson" at the Hudson River Theater (New York Times) and throughout the Capital District, earning them the title of "bombshell squad" (Metroland Magazine).

With their bawdy tunes, comedic quips, gorgeous costumes, and sexy stripping, the Lovelies never cease to keep the class in their acts or their tongues firmly planted in cheek.

LUMINESCENT ORCHESTRII + UNCLE EARL + WIYOS + DOC MARSHALLS

Luminescent Orchestrii: Romanian gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, hip-hop beats and Appalachian fiddle, all eaten and spit out by three violins, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and guitarron. www.lumii.org

Uncle Earl isn't your run-of-the-mill band. First of all, they're all female. But these aren't the Spice Girls. Think Agent Scully meets Janeane Garofalo in Mayberry, with a shot of whiskey.
Uncle Earl is literally a who's who of young women in old-time music, and wherever they go they're likely to raise a ruckus. www.uncleearl.net

Wiyos: A trio comprised of three-part vocals, washboard/harmonica/kazoo, guitar, and upright bass. The WIYOS transport listeners back to a time before TV and mass-media were the main sources of entertainment, to the days when music could be heard on live radio and at community dances, juke joints and house parties. The band creates an interactive and visual show in the tradition of performers like Fats Waller, Spike Jones and Uncle Dave Macon. They are passionate about infusing old-time American music with new blood; carrying this rich musical heritage into the 21st century and having a darn good time doing it.

The Doc Marshalls: With influences ranging from traditionalists such as Buck Owens and Johnny Cash, to innovators like Gram Parsons and Dwight Yoakam, this New York City quintet delivers an honest, unflinching honky tonk sound. "This Brooklyn-based Zydeco outfit has somehow escaped my radar for too long. If this don't get your Cajun blood boiling and a dancin', ya just ain't got no heart. Go out and see these guys and save the trip to the Big Easy." -The Village Voice

A Week of Kindness
sketch comedy

A Week of Kindness until recently was a bad handball team, with a bad handball team name, who had never won a handball game. They began to dabble in sketch comedy when a grizzled kinesiologist with insect strength told them that sketch comedy is good cross-training for handball. And the rest is history.

Dance Don't Destroy

A Benefit for Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn
with The Spunk Lads and DJ Motormouth

The Spunk Lads are London's legendary punk rockers. Incendiary live performers noted in both the annals of rock and police blotters across three continents, the Spunk Lads have called Brooklyn home since 2001. "We saw first hand what happened in London when the GLC was taken out by Thatcher," says lead singer Nick Knickers. "When government stops working for the regular yobbos, we have to work twice as hard to snatch it back."

Before and after the Spunk Lads is DJ Motormouth, spinning a molotov cocktail of hard-edged dance and rock mixes that has packed clubs in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Develop-Don't Destroy Brooklyn leads a broad-based community coalition fighting for development that will unite our communities instead of dividing and destroying them. DDDB's fight is costly -- legal teams, outreach, mailings, events, political lobbying. Tonight's event will help raise much-needed funds for our struggle. (www.dddb.net and www.nolandgrab.org)
