Explore a mass of bows, buttons, decals, trim patches and other notions at the decoration stations where Lina and Blanka will show you how to embroider, knit and have an all around great time doing hand sewn mods. All of your creativity materials are provided. Dive in and have fun!

>>! (A "Gayronic") ART JAM
with Mike Albo
Presented by Earl Dax

Irony may be dead, but "gayrony" is alive and well. This months ART JAM at Galapagos Art Space highlights performers whose stock in trade is gayrony: a post-modern consciousness combined with the lacerating wit that has been associated with gays since at least the days Oscar Wilde. This month's performers are exemplars of the gayronic form. According to New York Press, "Promo-trixie Earl Dax's third Tuesdays at the Galapagos Art Space in Williamsburg are quickly turning into fab confabs of gender-fucking music-oriented performance art; messy nights where caburlesque meets staunch politik-ing."

FEATURED THIS MONTH:

Mike Albo (pictured)
Author and performer Mike Albo headlines ART JAM to coincide with the paperback release of his novel, "The Underminer." Expect Albo's signature "best friend who casually ruins your life," to turn up blending rapid-fire monologues and ironic dance breaks...

Julie Klausner and Sue Galloway
Performing highlights from their comedy show "Free to Be Friends," a send up of 70's children's programming that educates the audience about the joys of "sisterhood..."

Varsity Interpretive Dance Squad aka V.I.D.S

Reimagining the excruciating enthusiasm of a high school pep squad with clever, synchronized dance routines...

Lesbian Overtones Vs. People Lution
Competing for the title of best parody of cloying musical ensemble, The Overtones feature an all female, all acapella quartet specializing in lesbian anthems by the likes of Melissa Etheridge, k.d. lang, and Ani Difranco. People Lution features an all gay male ensemble that apes the Up With People-type missionary choirs.

Inspired by the movie, our show is packed with magical acts from Japan and the Far East.

Taikoza (bottom pic) is a Japanese Taiko drum percussion group that uses the powerful rhythms of the Taiko drums to create an electrifying energy that carries audiences in a new dimension of excitement. The Taiko is a large, barrel-like
drum that can fill the air with the sounds of rolling thunder. Drawing from Japan's rich tradition of music and performance, Taikoza has created a new sound using a variety of traditional instruments. www.taikoza.com

From 8:30 to 10pm, be enchanted by Geisha performance Japan (Ayako Sana in "Memoirs of Tenshi Love"), intriguing Butoh solo performances (Jessi Gayle, Coco [top pic]) - "Historical and Contemporary versions of Courtesan dances" by Julia Kulakova and "Odyssey5 Troupe," Oriental dance Fusion by Mashala, Geisha Method Go Go by Lix Velvet, and from the Philippines, shining star Banaue Miclat.

Nate Smith Quartet with Confluence and Van Huffel

Aiming neither to shock its audiences nor simply to imitate others, the Nate Smith Quartet plays subtle, listenable music. The group spins yarns that are alternately reverent and mischievous, posing a refreshing challenge to those who say jazz is dead.

Confluence is the most recent release from a collective of New York musicians whose focus on original writing and improvising is both fresh and modern.

"The music Van Huffel plays with his quintet has one foot in the modern jazz mainstream and the other in the avant-garde." - Peter Hum (the Ottawa Citizen)
