CHINATOWN
free jazz
Daniel Carter, Shanir Blumenkranz, Kevin Zubek
One
of Free Jazz's most accomplished players, multi-instrumentalist
Daniel Carter has spent nearly 30 years trading
ideas with the cream of outside players from all over,
including trumpeter Roy Campbell, bassists Peter Kowald
and William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake.
Shanir
Blumenkranz, strumming and finger picking his bull
fiddle as if it was a large guitar, has become one of
the most in-demand local heroes over the past five years,
playing with giants like Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Jon
Madof, Louie Belogenis and more.
Kevin
Zubek (Tzadik Records) lashes, bounces and rebounds
his snares and toms...exercising his claves and ringing
his cowbell as if he was a ranch cook. Pumped up cymbal
evocations and wooden nerve beat-thwacks add to the polyrhythmic
bustle.
"Chinatown
is one of the freshest and most creative outings of recent
times."

CASEY
NEILL BAND
CD LAUNCH PARTY
'Memory Against Forgetting' (Daemon/AK)
Brooklyn
songwriter Casey Neil brings his band to Galapagos
to celebrate the release of his CD 'Memory Against Forgetting'.
The CD is a joint release between lefty publisher AK
Press and Daemon Records run by Amy Ray of the
Indigo Girls. The music is a collection of recordings
culled from the past decade that range from basement
punk songs to country, folk, and Celtic. Neil's songs
have garnered praise from radio and critics, as well as
musical luminaries Jello Biafra, Pete Seeger, and
Steve Earle. His raspy voice, well crafted songs and
devotion to the emotional center of the material has been
the foundation of his career on the cutting edge of American
roots music.
"Live
performance may well be the best introduction to Casey.
There's the palpable tension of an audience on the edge
of their seats. These are songs with stories well told.
This is what it's all about."
-Steve Earle
"(Casey
Neill) can muster some fearsome energy in concert ...
He's a skillful and deeply committed writer who deftly
blends Americana, Celtic folk, and rowdy rock into something
personal and true."
-The OREGONIAN (Portland, OR)

Kathy
Zimmer (bottom picture)
is a songstress whose music is at once sophisticated
and naïve, polished and quirky. She calls the music
she makes cosmopolitan folk, romantic urban
music created through old world ways. Her forthcoming
EP, dreamin, will be released in spring of 2005.

New York singer-songwriter
Alexa Georgevich sets clear, looping vocals within
intricate guitar structures to tell sea stories and
urban tales. At once sparse and complex, her songs explore
themes of escape and surrender in fantastic lands. Her
work evokes the simplicity of Vashti Bunyan or Sandy
Denny, with a vocal deliverance reminiscent of Kate
Bush or PJ Harvey.

OCULARIS
film series
High Above This Wall: The Cinematexas Roadshow
Ocularis presents a traveling show of work from the
Cinematexas International Short Film Festival in Austin
They call Texas the Lone Star state.
And lately some Texans have in fact been acting like lone
stars at the center of the universe: behaving as if their
law is mightiest, existing apart from any other galaxy.
But Cinematexas doesn't accept this cosmology. We've seen
some astonishing work these last few years, work from
all countries and in all genres; work that reflects the
inner and outer landscapes of battle, the social and emotional
architectures of war. We want to share this work with
our worldwide community stars are not singular, and that
it is always the conversation that matters most.
Works to be screened: A Room With a View in the Financial
District, Carola Dertnig, 2003, 5 min.; Fields, Julie
Speechley, 2003, 18 min.; Viva la Guerra (excerpt), Paul
Hanley, 2003, 5 min.; Seven Days, David Barker, 2003,
10 min.; Right Road Lost, Victoria Gamburg, 2001, 11 min;
Forbidden to Wander, Susan Youssef, 2004, 35 min.
