Radio Khartoum presents The Hepburns, Baskervilles, and Anthony Rochester
The Hepburns (Wales) - top picture - make pearly pop in the best UK tradition, albeit skewed sideways by cinematic caprices and the elliptical narratives that songwriter Matt Jones tosses off with all the playfulness of the Lucksmiths and wit of Momus, though pretty much sans any pretensions. Their organ and vibraphone riff-laden guitar-pop is British pastoralism at its most exotic--or is that British exotica at its most pastoral? Further reference points: The Monochrome Set, The Smiths, The Specials, Jake Thackray. The erstwhile Cherry Red artists release their third album for Radio Khartoum, "Something Worth Stealing," on November 6th. This is their first ever US tour.

Baskervilles sound like your favorite Sire new wave record with a blast of swinging 60s orchestration. They are a box of great singles. They are the song that you want to hear again on the radio. They are epic, catchy and up.

Tasmanian multi-instrumentalist Anthony Rochester - bottom picture - is the librarian's delight: smart, bookish, bespectacled pop meets funky basslines a la 1960s France (think Serge Gainsbourg or, more recently, Bertrand Burgalat), exquisite layerings of guitars, organs, synths, strings, a flute here, an off-kilter recorder there. Anthony spells D-I-Y with a P-A-N-A-C-H-E. Reference points: Komeda, Eno circa "Another Green World," Shuggie Otis, Stereolab. This is Anthony's first ever US tour.

Francis and the Lights
Francis is the future. With live electronics, two percussion players, and his dancing, Francis sings pop songs with desperation, ferociousness, and ecstasy. He leads his band with the unforgivingness of James Brown, working crowds into a ridiculous frenzy. The songs are classic, the beat is on the UP, the music is fresh and the man is unquestionably on a mission. Its all there.
Just released his debut ep "striking" at francisandthelights.com and myspace.com/francisandthelights
