"Galapagos Artist in Residence"
Katja Loher

Video installation

Katja Loher uses the audio, video, and elements of performance as basis for her gallery installations. She site-specifically melds the video and sound into the fabric of the gallery itself and creates multiple layers of visual fields. Her work distinguishes itself by its poetic imagery and astute investigation of space while remaining accessible.

Miss Loher creates lyrically evocative video sculptures that transport the viewer into a world entirely of her own making. In a number of works, for example, she projected onto large weather balloons.

In the past year this new body of work has been shown at the Russian State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, at "Art Digital" at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow, Russia, at "DIVA, Digital & Video Art Fair 2006", in New York City, and at Dublin Fringe 2006, among other showings. Katja Loher is the recipient of the CreaTVty Award 2004 (Swiss Television) and Art Credit Basel-Stadt Award 2004. This year she was awarded for the iaab (international exchange and studio program) Artist residency in New York and she is the recipient of the Alexander Clavel Foundation Cultural Development Prize 2006 of Riehen in Switzerland.
