New Orleans Street Performers Benefit
“2 Cities Under a Groove”

Janine Barris has organized a benefit called “2 Cities Under a Groove” to raise money and appreciation for local New Orleans street performers affected by Hurricane Katrina.  Including performances by various NY and NO street performers. The admission is a donation that will go to various New Orleans relief funds for Street Performers

The opportunity of this benefit is to acknowledge the inspiration and contribution street performers bring to our daily lives and to particularly celebrate New Orleans street performers and their families who have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  These artists are the heart and soul of New Orleans.

In order to make this benefit truly fun and entertaining, Janine Barris, a NYC actress, has brought together various local NO and New York street performers ranging in talent from magic to tap dancing. The night will be MC'd by Fish the Magish, a magician who has performed for many years on the streets of New Orleans and Boston and has now dedicated a great deal of his life to organizing benefits for Katrina Relief. Nate Farrar, a soulful blues singer/songwriter will be performing as well as The Alphabet City Street Stars Band whose R&B, Reggae sound will get the crowd dancing.  Dolores Sanchez, a choreographer and tap dancer, will perform to the electric beats of a bucket drummer and more still to be announced.

Janine Barris hopes that there will be an annual event of sorts like this one in NYC, perhaps one day Carnegie Hall, where various street performers from around the world come together to showcase their talents and inspire their audiences to give thanks for the joy and beauty they bring to our daily lives.

Damian Quinones w/ Chris Lind

DAMIAN QUIÑONES: Father of the 'Underground Sensation,' the oft-described "soulster" has been contributing a completely original NuYorican musical experience of his own design to the cultural collage of NYC, playing in venues such as Mercury Lounge, Pianos, Southpaw, Sin-e, and the Coral Room. Quinones' songwriting is part 60's pop (In the vein of Gainsbourg, Bacharach, Lennon/ McCartney, Davies, and Hayes/Porter), part 70's funk (in the mold of WAR orWillie Bobo) and has elements of electronic music and Reggae as well. His take on 'Urban Folk Music' is funky, expansive and equally at home in a solo acoustic setting as it is blasting full volume with the band. Quinones music is akin to a mix tape made from his Uncles old vinyl collection.

Combining pumping beats, jagged guitars, and an audiophile's love for rare and earthy recordings, Damian is currently recording with co-producer/studio wizard Jason Martin on a follow-up to his debut album New Movements in the Old School (Soluna Records) as well as an album co-produced by guitarist/producer Dan Laureano slated for release in 2005.http://www.damianquinones.net/home.html

CHRIS LIND: Highly influenced by the sounds of Nick Drake, Chet Baker, Wilco and Jeff Buckley, I'm a singer/songwriter that likes to work in a dynamic spectrum of styles.  Where I'm most comfortable seems to change everyday. (photo credit: Alys Kenny)

Get The Motion

"Get the MOTION" is the performance project of former folk musician, now dance revivalist Sam Rosen. Avant-reggae music, heavy distorted doo-wop, concussive R&B, all motion. I am giving you the motion. WITH: The New
Villagers, solo project of Fischerspooner's Ben Bromley

Rosen's voice is big and expressive and sounds like the
marriage of a '50s rock 'n' roll vocalist and an '80s alternative rock singer (Morrissey? David Gahan?), while Nelson's crystal clear voice is the perfect foil to his animated crooning. "The Look South" could have quite
easily become the "same old indie stuff," but ventures instead down the
slightly twisted path that Tom Waits traveled on "Mule Variations."

"New York is red hot with this little four track collage comin' at ya' straight from the NYC underground. This ain't no sissy polished turd from the boys of A & R lore. This is what music is meant to be - a collaborate initiative from some stellar musicians, a standup
professor of faders and knobs, Mr. Rob Fillmore, and a diamond in the rough (and let's hope she stays that way), Ms. Cathie Russo."

Sean Connery's first movie ever,
Darby O'Gill and the Little People, 8pm

In DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE take a wee bit of ancient
folklore, mix in some spectacular special effects and a magical cast,
and you've got one of the most enchanting fantasies of all time! A
frisky old storyteller named Darby O'Gill is desperately seeking the
proverbial pot of gold. There's
just one tiny thing standing in his
way: a 21-inch leprechaun named King Brian. In order to get the gold,
Darby must match his wits against the shrewd little trickster -- which
proves no small task, indeed! Disney’s DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE
PEOPLE casts a fun-filled spell of magic, mirth, and nonstop
shenanigans for the whole family.

"Even in this era of computerized "F/X," few films have been able to
duplicate the sublimely convincing visual magic -- and the effortless
charm -- of this 1959 Disney effort." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Opera on Tap

Opera on Tap is going on a gender bender! Your favorite Brooklyn- branded, unconventional and
sometimes inebriated opera company presents: Fach me?.. Fach you!!!

Sunday March 18th, our performers get to do the unthinkable in public!! No, it's not sex and it isn't
really violent, but it is definitely naughty. We've given our singers license to...get ready..."sing operatic repertoire from outside their fach (or vocal category, in layman's terms...)!!" Sopranos singing Tenor arias! Baritones singing Soprano arias!  Mezzo's living out their dreams of being Sopranos!

God only knows what else will happen!  Don't miss out!  There will be frosty beverages and, of course, many men in tights. We'll see you there!

Liz Isenberg, Cassette Concrete (kon-kret, like musique concrete in 1940s
france), and Vio/Mire.

Liz Isenberg
: folk music influenced by pop music

"Isenberg is a true testament to the DIY aesthetic... a diamond in the rough in a sea of anonymous artists with a guitar, microphone and internet connection... On the heels of a record which is so immediately accessible yet aesthetically challenging, Liz might not remain
indie-folk's "best kept secret" for long". -Northeast Performer Magazine

Cassette Concrete
: folk music influenced by tape music

Cassette Concrete: Urban Pollution: "Regardless of moniker, Carrigan's music is a unique blend of analog experimental folk that is incongruously charming in all its bedroom boredom glory.... A Tape Gone Leaves No Trace/Animal Faith is full of equal parts wide-eyed
experimentation and earnest emotion."
www.myspace.com/joshimusic

Vio/Mire
: folk music influenced by minimalism

Vio/Mire: AS220 (Providence, RI): "Delicate fingerpicked guitar, mournful vocals, gentle electronic surges, mmmm, good stuff. Think Microphones, Gravenhurst, or Low if they played more notes on their guitars."
