PUNCH

The city’s only consistent puppet slam!

FIRST PUNCH OF 2007! – FEATURING AN INTERNATIONAL PUNCH-OFF!!!Battling it out are Konrad Fredericks – acclaimed London streetPunch performer – and the 2 Punks with their version…

PUNCH is a monthly showcase for all things puppet. This month we’ve got dueling Punch shows, so you DON’T WANT TO MISS IT!!!
Curated by Gretchen Van Lente, of Drama of Works.

• KONRAD FREDERICKS is a professional street Punch showman working mainly in central London, South Bank and principa cities within a two hour drive of London. He also performs internationally at a wide variety of venues; under contract and
busking. To the best of his knowledge he is the only showman in Britain performing Punch on the street for a living, and one of the few professional traditional street puppeteers in the world.

• 2 PUNKS PUPPET THEATRE/DRAMA OF WORKS counters Konrad’s
traditional punch piece with their anarchic “Sid & Nancy Punch &
Judy Show.” It will be a learning experience to see these two
very different Punch pieces next to each other. Mike Wolf of
TimeOut NY says “Short but not-at-all sweet, the Sid & Nancy
Punch & Judy show is frayed, violent and hilarious in all the
right places.”

• THE JOSH & TAMRA SHOW are PUNCH favorites. They will delight
all with their twisted improv comedy of a thousand puppet
characters. The two met years ago at Upright Citizens Brigade
and now they tour extensively with their puppet counterparts.
They always dazzle PUNCH when they're in town and we're excited
to have them kicking off this year right!

• HOWIE LEIFER presents a video of his piece "THE RHYME OF THE
CHIVALROUS SHARK," based on a song by Wallace Irwin written at
the turn of the 19th century. Frank Hendricks provides the vocal
accompaniment. The video is of a live performance from Great
Small Works’s 2005 International Toy Theater Festival.

• EXPLODING PUPPET PRODUCTIONS (of “Die Hard!” fame) rounds out
the evening with a few wacky, funny shorts.

“Drama of Works invites the audience to re-examine their notions
of theatrical structure and method without seeming
self-important or compromising accessibility…This company will
be around for years to come. If you go see them now, you’ll be
able to say you knew about them before everybody did.” (www.offoffoff.com)

THE HAZZARDS MAKE-OUT PARTY
music and comedy

With Matt Hall + Patrick Borrelli
+ Big Boote

New York's baddest ukelele-strumming duo host a monthly Galapagos extravaganza. http://www.ukesofhazzard.com

Patrick Borelli is a writer and comedian living in New York City. He has performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Comedy Central's Premium Blend. He's also an excellent street hockey player/skyfighter. http://www.patrickborelli.com

Matt Hall is also a comedian living in New York City as well as an excellent street hockey player/skyfighter. He is awesome at the drum machine.

Bigbooté has existed as a modernist music force for over 10 years, arising from the cultural tarpit of Cortland, NY. Punk rock based on hearsay, a belief in NEW rockenroll, and a conviction that comes out in literal sweat, blood and tears. High-energy garage annihilation from coulda-been dead-end small-towners, relocated to the epicenter of enemy territory: hipster central: Williamsburg, Brooklyn. No white belts, no Strokes haircuts, no faux-hawks. Just broken jaws, broken guitar strings, and broken hearts. Bigbooté! Get up and dance or get outta the way!

Damian Quinones

DAMIAN QUIÑONES: Father of the 'Underground Sensation,' the oft-described "soulster" has been contributing a completely original NuYorican musical experience of his own design to the cultural collage of NYC, playing in venues such as Mercury Lounge, Pianos, Southpaw, Sin-e, and the Coral Room. Quinones' songwriting is part 60's pop (In the vein of Gainsbourg, Bacharach, Lennon/ McCartney, Davies, and Hayes/Porter), part 70's funk (in the mold of WAR orWillie Bobo) and has elements of electronic music and Reggae as well. His take on 'Urban Folk Music' is funky, expansive and equally at home in a solo acoustic setting as it is blasting full volume with the band. Quinones music is akin to a mix tape made from his Uncles old vinyl collection.

Combining pumping beats, jagged guitars, and an audiophile's love for rare and earthy recordings, Damian is currently recording with co-producer/studio wizard Jason Martin on a follow-up to his debut album New Movements in the Old School (Soluna Records) as well as an album co-produced by guitarist/producer Dan Laureano slated for release in 2005.
