You wanna get there right as a Beat-the-Devil set begins, because half the fun in seeing this volatile NYC jazz-folk-blues-punk outfit lies in watching the unfamiliar react the first time lead singer Shilpa Ray opens her mouth. Typical reaction: shock and awe. (Village Voice)

KEEP THE ARTS IN WILLIAMSBURG HOSTS SECOND SYMPOSIUM AND CELEBRATION TO ANNOUNCE
MISSION STATEMENT AND ACTION PLAN
co-sponsored by Blue Point and Sierra Nevada and will include free beer (!)
New York, NY – Keep the Arts in Williamsburg will host a symposium and celebration to present their mission statement and action plan on Friday You will hear from distinguished panel including New York State Assembly Member Joseph Lentol will provide an opportunity for high-level dialogue with important collaborators in the artistic and political communities.
with performances by:
Vangeline (pictured top)
Ambrose Martos (pictured bottom), physical comedian from the Happy Hour Clown Trio.
The Williamsburg section of Brooklyn was once an industrial neighborhood. During the 1990s and early 2000s, it experienced a huge influx of young artists drawn to its abundant, affordable raw space. A familiar urban script (e.g. Soho, Chelsea, Tribeca, etc.) then played out, as a vibrant cultural energy converted the neighborhood into a hipster haven, which in turn gave way to rapid gentrification. Soaring rents are now driving a mass exodus of the very
artists who made Williamsburg what it is
today, creating a crisis not only for artists
but for the general community.
As the arts have become a major driver of economic development and global competitiveness, urban
communities around the world have begun to address the
problem of artist dislocation as a serious issue of
community and economic sustainability.
Keep the Arts in Williamsburg seeks to harness the
talents of the local arts and creative industries to conduct
outreach and education for the political and economic
mobilization of the community to ensure that the
neighborhood retains a strong arts presence and mixed
income and economy for decades to come.
Panelists include:
Joseph Lentol, New York State Assembly Member
David Yassky, New York City Council Member
Joshua Nachowitz, New York City Council Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries & International Intergroup Relations
Zella Jones, Chair, NoHo Neighborhood Association
The Steering Committee includes:
Robert Elmes, Director, Galapagos Art Space
Adam Forest Huttler, Executive Director, Fractured Atlas
Jacob Krueger, neighborhood artist
Shawn Patrick McLearen, Artspace Projects, Inc.
Paul Nagle, Office of NYC Council Member Alan J. Gerson
